This is a great and simple way to teach your kids about how much they have and about sacrificing to help others. It’s also a great way to empower them to make a tangible difference they can wrap their little brains around.
Here’s the idea: Most families have a meal that they regularly eat out (for us, it’s Sunday lunch). The concept here is to intentionally “scrounge” for that meal (PB&J or something equally easy and affordable) and donate the cost of the meal to feed someone who is really hungry.
Did you know that the World Food Programme can feed a hungry child for $.025??? That means that the $15.75 that we usually spend on our Lahaina Pizza at Pizza Port will feed 63 hungry children.
So here’s what you do:
1. Explain to your kids that there are children in the world that don’t have enough food so sometimes they are hungry.
2. Also explain the good news that at there are kind people in the world who can give those kids the food they need if someone will buy it for them.
3. Explain that tonight instead of going out, your family is going to stay in so you can give tonight’s meal to someone who really needs it. To find out how many children your dinner will feed, simply divide the total by .25.
4. Let your kids make the final decision about which organization to give your meal to. Give them 2 or 3 choices depending on their age and then together you can enter in the amount and donate the money to feed those kids.
Some good choices to donate to are Food for the Hungry, World Relief or Samaritan’s Purse.
