Donate your books and fight illiteracy

This is a great way to teach your kids about the importance of education, how blessed they are to have access to it, and empower them to give that opportunity to someone else.

Better World Books raises money for literacy focused non-profit organizations both in the US and around the world. They re-sell donated books and send the proceeds to their non-profit partners. They also have a book-for-book program that donates a book to a literacy program for every book you buy.

Over the last 9 years, they have:

  • Raised over $10 million for Literacy
  • Directly sent more than 5 million books to Books for Africa, the National Center for Family Literacy, and Feed the Children

Some of their awesome partners:

They also make it REALLY easy to be a part of this…they even pay for shipping!

I don’t know about you guys, but our bookshelves are FULL of books I never plan on picking up again. Kids books I hate to read, grown up books, cook books, etc.

Here’s the plan:

1. Have each member of your family go thru their books, pick out the ones they’re done with, then pack them up to be donated…All the while talking to your kids about how much we have and cool it is that their gift will teach someone how to read.

*Please note…BWB doesn’t want your crappy books (these are going to be re-sold!), so please only send the ones in decent condition. You can read a list of the kinds of books they accept and don’t accept

2. Hop on their website and request a shipping label, print it out, pack ‘em up and send it! Easy-peasy.

You and your kids have just combated illiteracy around the globe.

Also, next time you’re in the market for a book (kid’s birthday presents? school text books?) check out Better World Books first and make a difference with your every day purchases.
